Tell us more about your piece! What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?

I wrote the piece in response to a writing prompt, which was write about something magical in an ordinary setting. I chose the Kroger on Patteson Drive in Morgantown, WV, because that is where I was doing my MFA in creative writing. At the time, I was a graduate student who was teaching composition to undergraduate students. So I incorporated familiar local settings into a story with supernatural elements.

How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece changed from then to now?

Unfortunately, some of the businesses in this story have closed since I originally wrote the story, but I don’t know that that matters. I liked the piece when I originally wrote it, and I’m excited that it is again accessible to readers.

Is there a specific message you would like readers to take away from reading this piece?

It’s a story about love and death and finding happiness in the moment, even in difficult moments. I guess the message is that life can be filled with both magic and great sadness. And those two things can co-exist.

What else would you like to tell readers about your writing? (Doesn’t have to refer only to your BCC piece)

I enjoy writing both realistic stories and speculative fiction. My fiction often features quirky characters or unexpected events. I like to take seemingly unlikely occurences, have them happen in a story and then show how characters respond.
